When people think of adventure in Pokhara, one activity almost always comes up first, paragliding. Floating high above lakes, hills, and the Himalayas is an experience that many travelers dream about.
Here’s what it actually felt like.
The Journey to the Takeoff Point
The adventure started early in the morning with a drive up to Sarangkot. As the vehicle climbed higher, the scenery became more breathtaking. Below us, the peaceful waters of Phewa Lake reflected the surrounding hills, while the snow-covered peaks of the Annapurna range appeared in the distance.
At the takeoff point, dozens of colorful paragliders were preparing for flight. Seeing them glide effortlessly across the sky made the experience feel both exciting and slightly intimidating.
The Moment Before Takeoff
After a quick safety briefing from the pilot, it was time to get ready.
Paragliding in Pokhara is usually done as a tandem flight, we fly with a trained pilot who controls the glider.
Standing on the hillside with the parachute spread out behind us, the pilot gave simple instructions:
Run forward, Don’t stop, enjoy the view.
Within seconds, we were running downhill and suddenly, the ground disappeared beneath our feet.
Floating Above Pokhara
The moment we lifted into the air was surprisingly smooth. Instead of feeling like a sudden drop, it felt more like floating. The wind carried us gently upward, and the view opened up in every direction.
From above, Pokhara looked completely different. The city spread out beneath us, surrounded by green hills and mountains. Below, the deep blue waters of Phewa Lake shimmered in the sunlight.
In the distance, the massive peaks of the Himalayas towered above the clouds.
For several minutes, everything felt peaceful and quiet, just the sound of wind and the incredible view around us.
A Little Extra Thrill
After enjoying the calm glide for a while, the pilot asked if I wanted to try a few aerial tricks. I said yes. Suddenly the glider began to spin and dip through the air, creating a rush of adrenaline. The view spun around us as we swooped across the sky before stabilizing again.
It was both terrifying and exhilarating at the same time. The perfect combination for an adventure activity.
Landing Beside the Lake
After around 20 to 30 minutes in the air, it was time to descend. As we slowly glided toward the landing area near Phewa Lake, the ground gradually came closer until we gently touched down.
The entire experience felt almost unreal.
From nervous excitement before takeoff to pure exhilaration in the air, paragliding turned out to be one of the most memorable moments of the trip.
